With a marrow? I’ve never eaten it before and I managed to detach a huge marrow from a friend’s plant accidentally yesterday, so now I need to eat it before it goes bad…

Fruit*

I’ve been very pleased with my fruiting plants this year, I’ve had loads of strawberries, redcurrants and rhubarb. I also planted a gooseberry bush and 3 blackcurrant plants which will hopefully provide heaps of fruit next year too.

*I’m trying to look on the positive side of allotmenteering and desperately trying not to think about the 2 nearly empty beds at the back of the plot where the pigeons struck!

I have had quite the infestation of black fly, I’ve been told to remove the tops but to be honest the infestation is so bad I’m not sure how that would help. besides this year I seem to have a huge population of ladybirds so I’m hoping that they will keep numbers down.

None of my potato plants have actually flowered yet, but I planted WAY more than was necessary so I have been digging up a few plants to sustain me. potatoes are so easy to grow and so satisfying.

Weeding woes

This is my first post in a few weeks, mostly because I’ve been hugely busy, but also because I’ve been a bit embarrassed about the state of my allotment. The year started off so well with bags of enthusiasm but this miserable weather has really dampened my spirits. Although my beautiful veg has taken a battering, the weather seems to have done little to impede the progress of the weeds, which have, slowly but surely, taken over every available inch of soil (much to my embarrassment).

SO I’ve attached a recent picture and vow to get on top of things this weekend, come rain or shine.

This is my favourite meal, pan fried salmon with goats cheese (from Moseley Farmer’s Market), with roasted sweet potato, peppers and tomato with a beetroot salad.

My goal this year is to be able to supply all of the veg in this dish (substituting sweet potato with butternut squash)

Making paths

My neighbour Peter told me recently that one of his allotment regrets was having grass paths in between his beds. I had been thinking that they looked pretty cute and that mine would probably go the same way, but he’s right its way to much hassle, I have no strimmer or mower to keep on top of them and it only encourages more weeds to creep in. So I’ve decided to put down bark paths in between my beds, my dad bought me 2 100 litre bags and I had newspaper and a black fabric weed barrier. The bark only managed 3 paths, but as ever its a work in progress.

I think the result looks pretty good!
